xAI
xAI’s models live on the commoditising output layer, so its edge has to come from elsewhere. The durable bets are distribution through X and compute at Colossus scale.
What would change this readGrok opens a sustained quality lead the other labs cannot close, or X stops being a distribution advantage.

Trains and serves on
It owns roughly a gigawatt and rents it out. COLOSSUS in Memphis and COLOSSUS II across Tennessee and Mississippi together carry about 1.0 GW, built in clusters of 110,000 GB200 and GB300 processors; Grok-5 is being trained there. It is also a compute SELLER: cloud agreements signed with Anthropic in May 2026 cover about 325,000 NVIDIA GPUs at $1.25B a month through 2029.
ConcentrationEvery processor in both COLOSSUS sites is NVIDIA silicon, so the entire AI segment rests on one chip vendor until the Tesla and Intel Terafab effort produces hardware.

- Weights
- Partial and stale. Grok-1 weights are Apache 2.0 and Grok-2 sits under a custom community licence; everything from Grok-3 onward is closed, and a promised Grok-3 weights release has not happened.

- Structure
- No longer a standalone company. xAI was acquired by Space Exploration Technologies Corp in February 2026 and is now its AI segment; the group listed on Nasdaq as SPCX in June 2026 and rebranded the unit SpaceXAI in July. Dual-class stock gives Elon Musk about 82% of voting power, Class B holders elect 51% of the board, and SPCX takes the Nasdaq controlled-company exemptions.
- Raised
- About $17B privately before a $10B round at a $200B valuation (Sep 2025) and a $20B Series E (Jan 2026); the June 2026 SpaceX IPO raised roughly $74.4B net, with AI compute named first among its uses
- Revenue
- The AI segment turned over $818M in the quarter to 31 Mar 2026 and lost $2.47B from operations on it, against $7.7B of segment capex in the same quarter.
- People
- Over 22,000 across SpaceX (31 Mar 2026); the AI unit is not broken out
Biggest single dependencyOne individual holds roughly 82% of the voting power of a newly public company whose AI segment lost $2.47B on $818M of revenue in a single quarter, and every processor it trains on comes from a single vendor.
The revenue figure is not Grok revenue. The AI segment as defined in the prospectus includes X, and the company states that in 2023 and 2024 substantially all segment revenue was X advertising, subscriptions and data licensing; no Grok-only figure is disclosed. No price trajectory is shown because there was nothing to compare against — xAI had no public API and no list price two years ago. The $250B acquisition and $1.25T combined valuations are press-reported; the acquisition itself is confirmed in the filing.
